PSU Casino Night for RAINN – Saturday January 21

On the evening of Saturday, January 21rst, chapters all across the country will be having events to raise funds and awareness to fight child abuse.

The national event webpage can be found at http://www.psupride.com/

Here in Sacramento, Mike and Amy Henkel have graciously offered up their home for a social gathering and poker night.  We will host a cocktail hour from 5-6 followed by multiple games.  For those who wish to play, 100% of the buy-in will go to RAINN.  Others that wish to donate directly can do so that night or send a check to the chapter.

The event flyer is attached here.  Also, click here to see and respond to the Facebook Evite.  Not on Facebook?  RSVP directly to Mike at LionGrad2001@gmail.com by January 14th.

October Chapter Update (Thanksgiving Family Drive & Elections)

Well, it hasn’t always been pretty but We Are…  7-1!    A couple quick updates for the chapter.  Please note for the bottom section (chapter elections) there is a deadline to submit interest/nominations by 11/11.

First, a VERY BIG thank you to Bridget (and Ryan) Sanders for hosting the game viewing at their house two weeks ago.  For those of you that didn’t attend we had a great turnout including many that hadn’t come to Players in the past.  Speaking as a parent who is usually chasing his son around Players, having a babysitter there was huge!  We didn’t even see the kids as they were doing crafts in the other room or playing outside.  Thank you again Bridget!  We will definitely be doing that again next year.

1. Philanthropy Message from Renee – We are starting our annual Thanksgiving family drive.  For those of you that our new, this is one of the most successful philanthropic events the chapter has ever done where we choose a special family and providing them with a “Thanksgiving dinner.” This year, due the wonderful generosity of the club last year, we are going to sponsor two families. These families will be chosen in a few weeks and the biographies will be sent to you.

We will be collecting at the football games starting Oct. 29 or checks may be mailed to Doug c/o BrightLine CPAs at 1024 Iron Point Road, Suite 1058 Folsom, CA 95630. The collection at the games should include canned goods and other non-perishable items. These items should be in unbreakable containers.  The response last year was great but I am confident this year we will match or exceed it.  If you have any questions you may e-mail Renee at rvh1@comcast.net.

2.  Officer Elections – As mentioned in the Summer Newsletter, we are holding open elections this fall for new officer positions.  Please read the attached document and consider getting involved.  Being an officer in this chapter is not a large time commitment but its a great way to meet great people and stay involved with Dear Old State.

As always, feel free to contact me directly at dbarbin@gmail.com if you have any questions.

For the Glory,
Doug

We are… Helping the Community!

One of my favorite quotes from Joe Paterno gets repeated in February when Dance Marathon occurs and millions of dollars are raised for children with cancer. The quote is “When we say ‘We Are… Penn State’ THIS is what they’re talking about!”

While we haven’t raised millions for such a cause, make no mistake, this chapter makes it mark on the community. For the second year in a row we have sponsored a local family for Thanksgiving who could otherwise not afford dinner. And this year we out-did ourselves with three boxes of food and $400 for the family. Please see the below note from Renee Van Heuit and HUGE thanks to her and all of you who helped this year!

Hi, everyone –

Well, Thanksgiving is over and “our family” was treated beyond all expectations. Your generosity was fantastic and brought tears to the eyes of the mother and a friend who was visiting. Wish you all could have been there!

I delivered the “goods” and gift card on Mon. The final total was 3 full cartons of goods and $400.00 for the gift card. I’m so proud of our club and those of you who were willing to be so giving. When the final total was determined, I had thoughts that perhaps next year, with this degree of generosity, we could support two families. Something to think about!!

Hope you all had as special a Thanksgiving as our family did!

Thanks again for being a great group. But what else could we be when ……..WE ARE……………………!!

Renée

Nittany Lions Helping a Local Family this Thanksgiving!

Special message from Renee Van Heuit, Philanthropy Chair

Hi, everyone –

Saturday,October 30, will be the start of our collection for the second annual Penn State Club “Turkey dinner” for a deserving family. Canned goods and/or cash will be collected at the next four games which are held at the Players Sports Bar & Grill, 4060 Sunrise Blvd., FO. Come join us to cheer – or to commiserate, as the case may be – and bring a donation for a family in need. Last year was very successful with members being extremely generous, much to the gratitude of the receiving family. The year’s family has not been chosen yet but we’ll let you know the details when it is. So come have a good time with fellow alums and help a family too. Remember WE ARE…………………!!

Thanks –
